Seven Wonders of the Ancient World
Colossus of Rhodes
The Colossus of Rhodes was a statue built by Chares of Lindos in 280 BC. It was of a Greek God named Helios, built in the city of Rhodes, on a Greek island of the same name.
It was made to celebrate Rhodes win over the ruler of Cyprus, Antigonus I Monophthalmus, whose son unsuccessfully tried to capture and rule over Rhodes in 305 BC.
Before the Colossuses destruction from an earthquake in 226 BC, the Colossus of Rhodes stood around 30 meters tall, which made it one of the tallest statues of the ancient world.
